Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by her mother, grandmother, and godparents. Her father abandoned her family. In her early years she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to the word association. Ford began to be attracted to acting as a teenager and joined the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School for brief time however, Ford realised that it wasn't the ideal place for her. Ford was then able to apply for a spot in the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford's first appearance on television was an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the when she finished her studies, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties with shows such as The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Also, she was a regular performer in the theatre, eventually being a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate was soon recognized for her stand-up comedies that were added to her selection in the year 1996.
